The graph illustrates the rates of houses that were being owned and rented in the UK, over two different time periods, 1991 and 2007. Overall, there was an increase of around five million homes in the total number of houses, when also, in both years, the percentage of houses being owned by someone was highest than the sum of all the other three categories. Beginning with 1991, the percentage of homes with an owner was 60 percent, while in 2007 it climbed to 70, with a total increase of 10 percent between the years. The second biggest rate in both time periods was the one representing homes being rented through social renting, beginning at 23 percent in 1991 and dropping to 17 percent in 2007, with a significant reduce. Furthermore, the percentage of houses being rented through private renting remained exactly the same in both years, at 11 percent. Finally, the rate of social housing was at 6 percent in 1991 and it decreased around 4 percent over the years, ending up at only 2 percent in 2007.

In many countries, the number of people spending a lot of time at work is growing rapidly, something that by some people is being characterized as a problem in modern societies. However, others believe that it constitutes a positive step in order to boost the global economy. In this essay I will asses both views, as well as the roots of the problem, and then give an opinion. Beginning with the cause of this situation, I would say that is closely related to the modern lifestyle in the last decades, and also to the role models that are being promoted in modern societies. Spending a lot of time at work, tends to represent a healthy and productive lifestyle, together with a meaningful life. Due to the huge promote of people being extremely successful in a young age, the majority of people believe that they have not achieved enough in their life and try to work hard in order to be successful. In this way, the professional sector has been the only priority for many people that focus mainly on their job and do not care about any other sector of life, such as family or leisure activities. Moving on to the pros and cons of this phenomenon, on the one hand, it is true that countries with people working many hours tend to have a stronger and more productive economy than others. Furthermore, if someone works hard, the possibility of being successful in their professional career is a lot higher, something that could only be an advantage in order to achieve their goals. On the other hand, in order to concentrate only in their job, most people have no time left to spend in other activities, a fact that could seriously affect the quality of someone’s life. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is necessary to achieve a balance between work and other sectors of life as it’s the only way to combine professional with personal success. In conclusion, modern societies have leaded many people to spend most of their time working and trying to focus on their professional career. In my opinion, spending a lot of time at work can definitely be positive as it can help you focus on your goals and follow your dreams but it should also be combined with spending time in recreational activities or family, as they represent an important sector of life as well.
