The diagrams compare two scenarios on how to protect the buildings in the flooding area. While in one scenario there is a stopbank, and in another scenario, there isn't one. We can observe that in area where there is a stopbank, the internal ponding level is much lower than the 100-year flood level in the river. This is in contrast to the area where there isn't a stopbank, the 100-year flood level is the same in the building area as it is in the river. However, it is also noticeable that in both scenarios, the distance between house floor level and 100 year flood/ponding level is the same. If we take a closer look at the stopbank scenario, it draws to our attention that the stopbank is made of a freeboard at top, a berm and floodgate at bottom which can be used to adjust the internal ponding level to avoid the water from overunning the stopbank. In addition, the internal runoff from the rain may also increase the internal ponding level.

While some people argue that students should be grouped together to form different classes based on their achievements in academic study, others insist that students with different academic levels be taught together. In my opinion, I agree with the latter. I strongly believe that students from different academic levels should sit together to be educated. On one hand, it is definitely true that there are certain benefits to divide students with similar academic levels. For example, it will be easier for teachers to prepare the teaching materials as the studying pace is more or less the same for the students in the class. However, this kind of division give rises to certain problems such as lack of diversity and creativity in the classrooms full of students with similar academic background. Besides, it is also unfair for those students who may only start to make efforts in studying at a relatively elder age. For example, many boys may only start to realize the importance of study in the middle school. But by that time, they would not have the second chance if they were divided to be grouped in the "slow classes". On the other hand, teaching students with different academic levels in the same classroom will bring certain benefits. Firstly, those students who study well can help those who are lagging behind. Secondly, students will have more motivation to study as there are role models in the classroom. Thirdly, students who don't spend so much time on academic study may have other talents in areas such as sports or music. A mix of students with excellences in different areas can be real fun. In conclusion, I support the argument that students with different academic levels should be taught together.
