Bài viết mẫuThe diagrams compare two scenarios on how to protect the buildings in the flooding area. While in one scenario there is a stopbank, and in another scenario, there isn't one.
We can observe that in area where there is a stopbank, the internal ponding level is much lower than the 100-year flood level in the river. This is in contrast to the area where there isn't a stopbank, the 100-year flood level is the same in the building area as it is in the river. However, it is also noticeable that in both scenarios, the distance between house floor level and 100 year flood/ponding level is the same.
If we take a closer look at the stopbank scenario, it draws to our attention that the stopbank is made of a freeboard at top, a berm and floodgate at bottom which can be used to adjust the internal ponding level to avoid the water from overunning the stopbank. In addition, the internal runoff from the rain may also increase the internal ponding level.
